13 Travel Tips You Need to Know Before Visiting Europe

Preparing for travel to European countries can feel overwhelming and never ending, which is why we’ve compiled this list of helpful travel tips to guide you through the process. Whether this is your first time flying across the pond or your fifth, check out the travel tips below to ensure a smooth and stress-free journey!

1. Convert Your Money

Read up on the exchange rates and form of currency accepted in the country that you are traveling to. If you are located in the Omaha area, First National Bank  offers up to 70 different types of paper currency. Many of these currency options are same day exchange, subject to availability (i.e. Euros, Swiss Francs, British pounds). Don’t let the worry of coming back with extra Euros keep you from sticking to budget, you can simply exchange any left over back to USD.

2. Keep Alcohol in Checked Luggage

You can’t come home from Spain without a couple bottles of Spanish wine, right? Keep these out of TSA’s hands by securely packing them in your checked luggage (you will be confiscated of liquids over three ounces in your carry on). Check out this step-by-step video tutorial to keep everything in one piece for the long journey home!

3. Learn Some Native Phrases

Locals will greatly appreciate the effort to communicate in their native language, so be sure to memorize a few basic phrases in advance (hello, please, thank you, etc.). Keep an index card for reference or check out these handy Penguin phrase-books available in many different languages.

4. Call Your Banks and Credit Unions

Without prior notice of the specific dates, locations , and duration of your travels, your bank will shut off your debit or credit card for fraud protection. Likely without notifying you first! Informing your banks and credit unions ahead of time is simple, just call the phone number on the back of your card(s) to speak with a representative.

5. Check in Online 24-hours Prior

To ensure that you get the most updated flight schedule and optimal boarding group, remember to check in for your flight 24 hours prior to departure. If your flight schedule has been moved to earlier in the day, this gives you time adjust your schedule accordingly instead of finding out at the airport when it’s too late.

6. Bring an Adapter

There’s nothing more inconvenient than checking into your hotel thousands of miles from home only to realize that you didn’t bring the proper equipment to keep your electronics and grooming tools charged.  Places like Target carry these for worldwide!

7. Book Trains and Transfers Ahead of Time

Train schedules become available 60 days prior to the date of travel. This is definitely something you’ll want to secure prior to leaving the country to ensure that your preferred time frame and route does not sell out. When traveling by rail to several cities or countries, consider purchasing a rail pass instead of individual tickets to get the most for your money. Head over to Rail Europe to begin building your itinerary or reach out to your travel agent for help with this step in the process.

8. Be Aware of Your Surroundings

Make sure that you are always aware of your surroundings and belongings, as tourists tend to be easy targets for pickpocketing. Opt for an over-the-shoulder bag you can keep hold of toward the front of your body and avoid keeping anything valuable in back pockets or easily accessible backpacks! Leave all valuables secured in your in-room safe before a long day of walking and exploring.

9. Bring proper walking shoes

In many of Europe’s historic cities, the sites worth seeing are best visited by foot. Unfortunately your go-to pair of sandals or slip ons likely won’t hold up for the many miles of walking that await you. We recommend bringing your most reliable and comfortable pair of tennis shoes to keep the blisters and foot cramps to a minimum.

10. Touch Base with Your Phone Service Provider

This is important as you’ll want to stay in touch, post pictures, and Google menu items. Touch base with your service provider regarding how international texts, calls, and data usage are associated with your account! If your plan does not include any international perks, disable your networks and stick to free wifi.

11. Allow Extra Time at the Airport

Get to the airport two hours prior to your departure in case of lines or delays. If you’ve ever missed a flight, you can imagine how frustrating it would be in a foreign country!

12. Educate Yourself on the Areas You Will Be Visiting

Don’t visit Venice and expect to find a slice of Italy’s renowned wood fired pizza. The reason is that wood burning ovens are banned here.  Also don’t assume that entrance lines to the Vatican will be shorter mid-week. Ask your travel agent how you can skip these lines. In short, do your research beforehand to prevent wasting valuable time when in destination.

13. Talk to the Locals

Looking for the most authentic restaurants, hidden gem shops, and uncrowded beaches? Talk to the locals! They know the ins-and-outs of their city better than any visitor review you’ll find on TripAdvisor. This is where travel tip number three can be put to good use again!

Do you have any go-to travel tips for Europe that we missed? Let us know in the comments!

With so many resorts to choose from, it’s easy to get overwhelmed by pictures, online reviews, and overall information overload. Get in touch with an Enchanted Honeymoons travel agent today about travel packages to Europe! You can also reach us at 402-281-3022.

Paris is one of our favorite cities to visit. If you are traveling near France, we recommend making some time to visit this charming city. There is much to see, but we narrowed it down to our favorite can’t-miss sites for the ultimate 48 hours in the City of Lights.

France 3

Day One

With only 48 hours, you want to get up and out of your hotel room early! Start your morning with breakfast at Cafe de Flore. It’s the oldest coffeehouse in Paris, so you’ve likely seen a lot of breakfast posts on Instagram from this spot. Order a cup of chocolat chaud (hot chocolate) or coffee, a croissant with some jam, and watch Parisians frolic through the city as Paris starts her day.

Next, walk to the nearby Jardin du Luxembourg and stroll through the park, orchards, and rose garden. Make your way north toward the Pont de l’Archevêché. This bridge is behind Notre Dame, and thus it’s a very popular spot for photos. The bridge leads to a cobblestone pathway along the Seine, giving you a breathtaking backdrop of the famed Parisian cathedral. You may have seen this bridge covered in “love locks” not too long ago (they have since been removed).

Head inside the Notre Dame Cathedral and prepare to be astounded by the incredible architecture. Then it is a quick 5-minute walk to Sainte Chapelle, a royal chapel in Gothic-style. As you enter Sainte Chapelle, you’ll be immediately stunned by the beautiful stain glass windows throughout the church.

Across the street, take a quick peek inside the very quaint Shakespeare and Company. This bookstore is the oldest in France! From here it is a quick 10-minute walk to the Latin Quarter where you can stop for a glass of wine with excellent bread and cheese. If you did not make it to Cafe de Flore for breakfast this morning, it’s not too far from the Latin Quarter and open for lunch and dinner.

Next, hop on the Metro (much faster and cheaper than Uber or a taxi in Paris) and head toward the Louvre. You can’t come to Paris and not visit the Louvre! I’d purchase your tickets in advance to avoid the long line you’ll inevitably come across at any time of day to get in. After viewing the famous Mona Lisa, take another wine break at L’Ecluse Saint-Honoré.

Finally, stroll through the Jardin des Tuileries at sunset before it’s time to get ready for dinner. We highly recommend Le 39V near the Champs-Élysées. It’s a bit pricey, but the food and views are unbeatable. You can even catch a glimpse of the Eiffel Tower from the patio! It’s the perfect ending to a perfect first day.

Day Two

Breakfast should most definitely be had at Angelina’s. Indulge in the Angelina Breakfast option with hot chocolate. Then, hop on the Metro to Montmartre, which is our owner Lori’s favorite area in Paris. After that, get off at Lamarck/Caulaincourt station and head toward La Maison Rose. Next, pay a visit to the towering Basilique du Sacré-Cœur and overlook the sprawling city down below.

After taking in the sights of the city, start down the famous steps at Square Louise Michel and walk towards Le mur des je t’aime. This is also another highly popular spot for photos next to one of the most amazing creperies in the city—Crêperie Brocéliande. Here they have savory and sweet crêpes that cannot be missed.

Next, hop back on the metro and get off at Trocadéro station at the Palais de Chaillot. Cross the Jardins du Trocadéro and Pont d’Iéna toward the most famous landmark in all of Paris—the Eiffel Tower. Save precious time by buying your tickets online in advance to enjoy the birds-eye view of Paris from both viewing levels. Try taking the stairs down—it really is a trip!

If you chose to head to the Eiffel tower after leaving Montmartre, next check out the Arc de Triomphe for a spectacular view of the city. Then work your way back toward The Louvre for lunch at a place called Le Soufflé. After lunch, do some much needed retail therapy at Champs Elysses.

After shopping, we suggest having dinner at L’Absinthe (if they are serving the vegetable risotto, GET IT!). If it happens to be a Thursday night, make sure to go to the Musée d’Orsay for a late night museum visit. The museum is open until 9:45 pm on Thursdays, so we highly recommend taking advantage of that! Again, buy your tickets online.

Your Final Night

Lastly, to finish off your night, head back to the Eiffel Tower and enjoy the twinkling lights. You can catch them for the first 10-minutes of each hour. If you weren’t in the mood for dinner at L’Absinthe, opt for a six-course meal on the second floor of the Eiffel. Our owners Lori & Kem dined here on their most recent trip to Paris and deemed it a once in a lifetime experience. It’s splurge, but  incredible, and an ideal way to end an incredible trip to Paris. You will need to make reservations well in advance.

If you happen to find some downtime or are looking for alternative activities to the ones we mentioned above, some of our other favorites in the city of Paris include visiting the incredible Palace of Versailles, cruising the River Seine, and Musee d’Orsay.

Do you have any Paris favorites that we missed? Let us know in the comments!

Have you ever found yourself hoping to trade the frostbite and blizzards for Christmas in the Caribbean? We don’t blame you.  Below we’ve listed some of our favorite holiday traditions and celebrations that are completely unique to the Caribbean islands!

1. Junkanoo, Bahamas

Junkanoo is a spectacular street carnival that the Bahamians begin preparing for months in advance.  This celebration entails locals donned in brightly decorated costumes, dancing and singing to Caribbean rhythms to honor legendary West African Prince, John Canoe. You get two chances to catch the festival, which takes place on both December 26th and January 1st in the island’s capital of Nassau.

2. Festival of Lights, St. Lucia

Make your way to the island’s capital city of Castries in December 13th to discover the Parade of Lanterns, dancing, and a grand finale of fireworks. Just as it sounds, this Festival of Lights is a celebration of light conquering dark, honoring the Saint Lucia or “Saint Lucy” (the patron saint of light). The most recent addition to the festival, the Lantern Ritual, takes place at the harbor where lanterns are placed in the water to symbolize the prayers and wishes of the year to come.

3. Sand Yards, Cayman Islands

A white Christmas is just something the Caribbean has learned to live without, so we thought. When Christmas-ing in the Caymans, don’t miss the locals’ imitations of snow-covered lawns by covering them in powdery, white sand. Sounds like a pretty great alternative to us!

4. Nelson’s Dockyard Christmas Champagne Party, Antigua

A tradition that has been taking place for 25 years and counting, Antiguans head to Nelson’s Dockyard on Christmas morning for their annual Champagne Party. About 500 bottles of bubbly are popped for this extravaganza, with all proceeds given to charity.

5. Harbour Fest, Jamaica

There’s no better way to ring in the New Year than with a dazzling firework display. Jamaica’s Harbour Fest is just that, live reggae performances and a wide array of craft vendors leading up to the main event.

Secrets 4

Our travel specialist Mandi Schlautman just returned from a fun-filled family getaway in Costa Rica! Read on for her honest review of Secrets Papagayo, the Buena Vista Tour, and a day spent in the town of Tamarindo.

Secrets 3

Secrets Papagyo

Mandi stayed with her family at Secrets Papagayo, an AM Resort in Costa Rica. This was her first time staying at an AM Resort, and she loved everything about it. She ranked this a 5/5 on how likely she’d be to recommend this property for her clients! “The service at Secrets was amazing! Everyone was so friendly and accomodating. It is only 20 minutes from the airport which was nice too.”

When asked for a negative on the resort, Mandi pointed out that the resort is very hilly and requires a lot of walking to get around. While not exactly a bad thing, it wouldn’t be great for every traveler.

Mandi ranked both the food and the rooms as a 4/5, and ranked the resort overall as a 5/5.

Secrets 2

Buena Vista Tour

Mandi describes the Buena Vista Tour as “a must for clients going to Costa Rica!” In fact, this was her second time doing the action-packed tour. The tour includes 9 zip lines, a jungle water slide, lunch, horseback riding, and hot water springs.

Secrets 1

Tamarindo

Mandi’s favorite part of her Costa Rica trip was Mother’s Day spent in the town of Tamarindo. She and her family started the day with mass at a local Catholic church in the town. After that, they walked to a restaurant on the beach that was owned by a California couple who also run a surfing company and resort.

Alaska is the most exotic destination you can travel to without a passport. You’ll find sprawling mountain ranges, vast open sky and spaces, plus days that are twice as long (or nonexistent, depending on the season). Nature is king here, and it can be experienced in all of its glory from the comfort of one of these luxurious lodges.

Alaska - Denali

1. Denali Backcountry Lodge

Denali Backcountry Lodge is an all-inclusive lodge located in the heart of Denali National Park. It is relatively easily accessible compared to more isolated Alaska lodges. The Wilderness Express Rail (WEX) runs many times a day from Anchorage to Denali National Park. It is approximately a 7.5 hour express rail ride. Book one of the private cabins on this property for stunning views and the perfect place to stay in order to explore the ruggedly wondrous backcountry of Denali National Park. We aren’t the only ones that love this lodge! In 2017, Denali Backcountry Lodge was honored as one of the top ten adventure lodges around the world by National Geographic.

Alaska - Kenai Fjords

2. Kenai Fjords Wilderness Lodge

Kenai Fjords Wilderness Lodge is on Fox Island, which is just a 12-mile boat ride from Seward, though it would seem far more remote. You can reach Seward from Anchorage in about 4.5 hours by WEX. In addition, you can reach Seward directly via glacier cruise. Fox Island is located in the middle of Resurrection Bay, just outside Kenai Fjords National Park. Customize your own adventure itinerary with activities that suit your desires, such as an evening kayak tour. This tour sets out from your waterfront cabin at 8 PM. It is the perfect way to unwind and reflect, surrounded by the beautiful mountains and water.

Alaska - Ultima Thule

3. Ultima Thule Lodge

Last but not least, Ultima Thule Lodge is the ideal place to stay in Alaska for those looking for complete isolation, according to Forbes. We love this family-owned place because it is family owned by a couple and their two adult children. The “homespun, but undeniably luxurious” Ultima Thule Lodge is the perfect setting for your Alaskan adventure. Book one of the five five-star cabins sitting on 5 gorgeous acres of land, river, and mountains. You’ll find fluffy bearskin rugs, Craftsman furniture, and a hot shower, in addition to a shared outdoor cedar sauna and hot tub. These luxurious cabins are the base for Ultima Thule’s adventure activities. Each day, guests board two- and four-seater planes to do whatever outdoor adventures you can think of! Think hiking, wildlife spotting, fishing, and rafting, in addition to backcountry skiing in the spring.

Looking for a little adventure on your next getaway? These destinations offer much to explore and tons of activities that adventure seekers will love. Check out our list of the best destinations for adventure seekers below.

adventure travel - jamaica

1. Jamaica

USA Today recognizes Jamaica as an adventure-seeker’s paradise, with attractions ranging from thrilling to spooky!

Black River Safari is a truly unique activity for adventure travel. Black River is Jamaica’s largest navigable river where will find 100 species of birds, mangroves, wetlands, and crocodiles. Book a tour that takes you through the river to introduce you to these giant creatures up close.

Luminous Lagoon is a unique Jamaican attraction. Take a guided boat tour at nighttime through this lagoon filled with microorganisms which emit a glowing blue light at your touch. You can dive right into the lagoon to test out this magic for yourself!

Rose Hall Mansion is home to the White Witch of Rose Hall – at least, home to the ghost of her… Take a tour of this haunted mansion and soak in this Jamaican ghost story for yourself.  Annie Palmer earned the title ‘White Witch’ for allegedly killing three of her husbands and countless slaves.

adventure travel - hawaii

2. Hawaii

All of the Hawaiian islands are home to a host of activities for adventurists. Three islands in particular are perfect for adventure travel, according to Travel Channel.

Hawai’i, the Big Island, is known for hiking, culture, and wildlife. Here you will find Kilauea which is the most active volcano in the world. Take a guided hike through the waterfall pools and dipping valleys and find lava flowing into lush rainforests. The Big Island is also home to amazing wildlife including humpback whales in winter.

Maui is known for it’s beaches, hiking, and food. Here you will find a beach for everyone’s taste –  calm waters for snorkeling, hidden gems unspoiled by tourists, and the biggest surfable beach in the world. You can also hike through bamboo forests, waterfalls, and the volcanoes. Don’t miss the Road to Hana which is one of the most famous attractions in Hawaii.

Molokai is known for culture and history, and adventure. 50% of it’s inhabitants are indigenous to the area which makes this the least tourist-y island in Hawaii. Here, preservation of the environment and culture is more important than tourist attractions. Be sure to visit Halawa Valley where you can take a guided hike through ancient temples, waterfalls, and swimmable natural pools. You should make time to see Kalaupapa Peninsula. Here you will find a time-travel adventure involving St. Damien. St. Damien was a young priest who traveled to Molokai to help patients with leprosy. He is known as the USA’s first Saint.

adventure travel - STL

3. St. Lucia

According to U.S. News Travel, thrill-seekers should look to the West Coast of St. Lucia, specifically the Soufriere area for their adventure travel. Here you will find The Pitons as well as Sulfur Springs Park. Both are must-see spots for anyone visiting St. Lucia for adventure travel!

Gros Piton and it’s brother Petit Piton are iconic – you will recognize them in the picture above. These volcanic plugs (land formations made out of volcanic materials) rising out of the Caribbean sea are covered in emerald colored vegetation. You can hike both of the Pitons, but Petit Pinon is for pros only as it is incredibly steep. Gros Piton is also strenuous, but more do-able.

Sulfur Springs Park is known as the only “drive-in volcano” in the Caribbean. This active volcano emits sulfuric steam rather than lava, making it safe for cars to drive right next to it. Those who visit the park may also want to take a dip in the sulfuric pools, but beware of the rotten egg smell!

Farther north you will find Rodney Bay and Pigeon Island National Park. Visitors can hike to Fort Rodney, an 18th century military ruin with panoramic views. This is also a great place to take kids as you will learn much about the history of the area and the people that used to live there.

adventure travel - PR

4. Puerto Rico

According to the Travel Channel, Puerto Rico is a known destination for adventure travel thanks to it’s diverse climates, lush jungles, beautiful rivers flowing through mountains, and dry forests. Caving, snorkeling, and zip lining are among the most popular activities on this small island.

Angels Cave and Ro Camuy Cave Park are two of the largest caves in the Caribbean and are perfect for spelunking. Natural pools and beautiful calcite formations fill Angels Cave. Here major adventure-seekers can repel down Angels Sinkhole.  Ro Camuy Cave Park is one of the largest, most dramatic cave systems in the world. Only a small portion is open to the public. This park consists of 3 sinkholes and 2 caves, plus an underground river you can repel or hike to.

El Yunque and Toro Negro Rainforests both offer zip-lining tours. El Yunque consists of 28 acres of mountainous rainforest terrain filled with hidden waterfalls and trails for every skill level. Toro Negro rainforest is 1000 feet higher than El Yunque and much less visited. Here you can hike through a coffee plantation to Quebrada Rosa, an unspoiled, natural creek before zip-lining through waterfalls, canyons, and forests.

adventure travel - DR

5. Dominican Republic

According to Travel Channel, the Dominican Republic is the most-visited Caribbean destination. Here you will find several adventure travel activities. You can zip-line with monkeys, swim with wholes, or explore an ancient cave.

One of the few places in the world where you can watch humpback whales migrate is the Sanctuary for the Marine Mammals of the Dominican Republic. January through March, humpback whales migrate to Silver Bank between Dominican Republic and Turks and Caicos. True wildlife enthusiasts can take a week-long excursion with a tour guide to see this unique site.

On the Monkey Jungle and Zip-Line Adventure tour you can zip-lining through the jungle with friendly monkeys. The grand finale involves a 60-ft free fall into an ancient cave.

Fun Fun Cave starts on horseback, where you are led to Los Haitises National Park. Here you will hike through the luscious terrain and rappel into a cave. After that, adventure-seekers will swim through a river leading to a tunnel where Fun Fun Cave will appear! Inside you will find engravings and rock paintings, her ghost from the Taino natives of the Dominican Republic.
