About the Couple
Jamie and I both grew up in Council Bluffs, Iowa. We went to the same grade school, junior high, and high school, while he also lived three blocks from my grandma’s house. Funny enough, we never really talked (even though we had some of the same friends). Fast forward 20 years later, a good friend of ours suggested we go out. We went on our first date and the rest was history! Whenever the subject of marriage came up, we both said we wanted to get married on a beach. That’s exactly what we did! It was so amazing and beautiful. We couldn’t be happier with the way the wedding and our life together has turned out!
Favorite aspects about the resort
The hotel is surrounded by beautiful turquoise ocean on three sides! The service was great and the sweet shop was a favorite of everyone’s (amazing desserts and gelato were part of the all-inclusive). Our wedding cake was much larger than described, it was 8″ thick and probably 15″ diameter! We picked Mocha and White Chocolate Brownie with Bourbon Whiskey Cream.
The service of the hotel staff was excellent. They will steam the bride’s dress, bridesmaid’s dresses, and grooms/groomsmen shirts. The wedding staff put out my decorations that I brought with me, cleaned them up after the reception, put them in a bag, and delivered them to my room the next morning. That was great! I had previously arranged for guests to do it and was happy they didn’t end up having to. The upgrade to the Turquoise Tower was very nice.
Our Photopro photographer was Jessica, who did a wonderful job. We liked her pictures so much that we did end up buying more than what was included in our package!

Another favorite resort of mine is Royalton Riviera Cancun Resort & Spa. This property is a bit off the beaten path, which is perfect for couples or families looking to get away. For those looking for an adults-only experience, book the Hideaway section.
Excellence Riviera Cancun is another great option. I have toured this property many times and I am always struck by the distinct luxurious feel and attention to detail! Not to mention, the food is some of the best I’ve experienced at an all-inclusive resort.
Splurge Options
Lastly, one of our favorite new resorts from the Hard Rock brand is UNICO 20°87° Riviera Maya. This adults-only all-inclusive property has a unique cultural feel. Each space evokes Mexico’s past and present and you will find artisanal touches in every corner.
Our family recently stayed at The Grand at Moon Palace Cancun. This was a great property for a large group! It is actually an extension of the Moon Palace resort. Here you’ll find something for everyone, from a lively waterpark to secluded pools.
El Dorado Casitas Royale is a property that truly never disappoints! In fact, it was voted one of Conde Nast Traveler’s Top 100 Hotels! Here you can enjoy all of the amenities and restaurants of neighbor hotels El Dorado Royale and Generations Riviera Maya.

We love experiencing new resorts throughout Mexico and the Caribbean, but there are a few classic all-inclusive properties that we keep going back to. Read on for our list of the 5 best “oldies but goodies”.
Moon Palace
We have been proud partners of Palace Resorts since we opened our doors in the early 90’s. Our family has stayed at Moon Palace several times and there’s a reason we keep going back and always recommend it to our clients. In fact, there are several reasons! For one thing, this classic all-inclusive resort in Cancun, Mexico has something for everyone. With 2,130 rooms and 4 complexes, it is one of the largest resorts in the Cancun and Riviera Maya area.
During our family’s last visit in March of 2018, we stayed at The Grand at Moon Palace. This is a brand new section of Moon Palace, and offers a step above when it comes to luxury and service. You’ll still have access to everything on the main property, but you’ll also be able to experience exclusive restaurants, pools, and elevated service.
Sandals Montego Bay
This list would not be complete without mentioning the uber-romantic Sandals Resorts. We have worked with Sandals Resorts since we opened our doors and we always suggest these properties for destination weddings and honeymoons. Sandals Montego Bay is actually the original Sandals property, so of course we had to include it on this list of classic all-inclusive resorts. The property is located on the most exclusive, private white-sand beach in Jamaica, where offshore reefs create the calmest waters for leisure swims. Despite it being a classic, it has been completely re-imagined and modernized. However, it still maintains its classic charm and we love sending our clients here.
Hilton Playa del Carmen (formerly The Royal Playa del Carmen)
The Hilton Playa del Carmen has been re-branded from the former The Royal Playa del Carmen. If you stayed at The Royal in the past, you can expect the same classic all-inclusive resort with Hilton’s unprecedented level of service. This is a great option for groups or couples because it is exclusively for adults. In fact, this is the first adults-only all-inclusive property that I stayed at with my family when I turned 18!
One of the very best things about this classic all-inclusive property is it’s location. It is located just steps from Playa del Carmen’s famed Fifth Avenue. Here you’ll find uneatable nightlife, dining, and shopping. It’s proximity to the action makes it an ideal property for those that want to venture off property.
Riu Palace Cabo San Lucas & Riu Santa Fe
Riu properties are a great budget-friendly option if you are looking for the classic all-inclusive experience in Cabo. Conveniently, Riu Palace Cabo San Lucas and Riu Santa Fe are located directly next to each other on Medano Beach. This is one of the best locations in Cabo San Lucas! In fact, you can walk Medano Beach directly to the downtown area in about 25-30 minutes. We did just that when we stayed at Riu Palace Cabo San Lucas for my stepbrother’s wedding in 2017.
Riu Santa Fe offers more of a party atmosphere and has a lower price point as well. We helped one of my friends and her now-husband plan their joint bachelorette/bachelor party here and it was absolutely perfect. As stated above, my stepbrother and his wife got married at Riu Palace Cabo San Lucas, and we highly recommend it for brides and grooms planning a destination wedding. Also important to note is that guests of Riu Palace Cabo San Lucas have access to Riu Santa Fe, including all of their pools, bars, and restaurants.
Sandals South Coast
Formerly Sandals Whitehouse, Sandals South Coast is located in Whitehouse, Jamaica. We love this property and so do our clients! To make this classic even more appealing, you can now book one of their all-new Over-the-Water Bungalows! In addition, the property has an overwater bar and a romantic Over-the-Water Chapel for destination weddings. Not only is Sandals South Coast set on a 2-mile stretch of Jamaica’s most pristine white-sand beach, it is also nestled within a 500-acre nature preserve. In addition, it has three pools, including Jamaica’s largest. And the overwater bar isn’t the only new place to eat and drink! You can also enjoy the brand new Sushi on the Sand restaurant right on the beach.

During their stay, Krete and his group stayed at two resorts and toured a total of fourteen. We decided to break up his review into two parts. Cancun Resorts Review 2022: Part One
Coral Level Iberostar Selection Cancun
Krete checked into the Coral Level at Iberostar Selection Cancun on Sunday, April 10. Here, he and his group stayed for 2 nights. The Coral Level is a private, adults-only section of the Iberostar Selection Resort with premium amenities as well as amazing rooms. The main property is family-friendly and has great kids’ play area with a swimming pool, splash park, and jungle hike area. There is also an amazing golf course and six restaurant dining options. Krete and his group ate at the Teppanyaki Naga Hibachi restaurant which was delicious and had great sushi appetizers.
ATALIER Playa Mujeres & ESTUDIO Playa Mujeres
ATALIER and ESTUDIO are sister properties and opened in 2019. ESTUDIO is the family-friendly side and ATALIER is the adults-only side. Both resorts are stunning! All guests at ATALIER have access to ESTUDIO, but not vice versa. At ESTUDIO, you’ll find five restaurants. ATALIER has an additional three restaurants which are private and exclusive to ATALIER guests. Both properties have a contemporary yet traditional Mexican vibe. Krete found the feel of this hotel to be similar to Excellence properties.
ESTUDIO Playa Mujeres
ESTUDIO is great for families with kids under 12. However, there isn’t a ton to do for teens, according to Krete. They do have a family suite that sleeps seven people and also guarantees connecting rooms for large families.
Dreams Vista Cancun Golf & Spa Resort
Dreams Vista is a family-friendly, all-inclusive resort in Cancun located in the exclusive gated community of Puerta del Mar. Every single room on the property boasts a breathtaking view of the Caribbean Sea or nearby Isla Mujeres. Dreams Vista has it all and more: an amazing 18-hole golf course, a world-class spa, etc. In addition, you’ll find unique amenities like a climbing wall and an outdoor theatre.
Grand Fiesta Americana Coral Beach
Grand Fiesta Americana Coral Beach also boasts ocean views in every single one of its suites. One thing that sets this property apart is that it is home to the largest spa in Latin America. This resort has great room options for families including larger family suites as well as guaranteed room connections.
Grand Oasis and The Pyramid at Grand Oasis
The Pyramid is a resort within Grand Oasis Cancun. When you stay at Pyramid, you have access to the entire Grand Oasis property plus exclusive access to additional beach clubs, restaurants, as well as adults-only sections. The main Grand Oasis property is family-friendly. Grand Oasis is the only property with an on-site casino in the Cancun Hotel Zone. Krete described this property as having a “Vegas-at-the-beach” vibe.
Secrets Riviera Cancun
Secrets Riviera Cancun has something for everyone.
What kind of pool are you in the mood for today? Head to the Infinity pool for a more tranquil day or to the Xcelerate pool for a party atmosphere. Want something more in the middle? Check out the Energy pool. In addition to three great pools, this property also has five restaurants.
Krete mentioned two unique things about the rooms here. First, all rooms come with a tablet that you can order room service from as well as make dining reservations throughout the property. Secondly, ordering room service here is a uniquely private experience because there is a secret box in which the delivery is placed.
Breathless Riviera Cancun
Breathless Riviera Cancun is a great adults-only property. It is a wonderful option for groups because it has high-energy areas mixed with more relaxing areas. Therefore, everyone can enjoy their desired vacation experience.

Many newlyweds dream of an overwater bungalow for their honeymoon. If you don’t want to pay for a ticket to the Maldives or Bora Bora, consider looking into a honeymoon at Sandals South Coast in White House, Jamaica. We love the quiet and tranquility of this romantic resort. Don’t worry if you do not end up booking an overwater bungalow – all rooms and suites feature patios or balconies with stunning views of the white sand beach.

This one was a standout across the board and one they both agreed on.

The rooftop areas and beach clubs, especially on the Impression side, give it a more boutique, high-end feel compared to a typical all-inclusive. This all-inclusive resort also stands out for its food and overall attention to detail, which is something our clients really notice at this price point. Between the design, amenities, and overall experience, this is one of the top choices for couples who want something a step above the standard all-inclusive.

It also offers a more elevated experience without jumping into the highest price tier, which makes it a great value option. This is a really strong pick for clients who want something that feels newer and more upscale without going all the way into luxury pricing.

It was not necessarily at the top of their list going into the trip, but after seeing it in person, it quickly became a favorite. Amanda also has a client getting married here in November, which made it even more helpful to tour.

One of the biggest highlights is the spa, which is more of a full experience than just a quick add-on. The resort also has a great balance for families who want both relaxation and entertainment in one place. It is a strong option for clients who want a newer feeling property with plenty to do, but still want a resort that feels put together and not overly chaotic.

- Beautiful overall setup
- Gorgeous spa
The biggest highlight here was the spa. Marissa especially loved it and wished they had more time there, which says a lot considering how many resorts they saw in such a short timeframe.
A Few Additional Takeaways
Not every resort is for everyone, and that is exactly why trips like this are so helpful.
Dreams Vista and Dreams Jade were not the favorites overall. That said, Dreams Jade is very unique. It is technically a family resort but tends to attract more honeymooners and older couples. It is also fully handicap accessible throughout the entire property, which can be a major selling point for the right client.
The resorts they toured were intentionally chosen because they are ones we book often, but we did not feel we knew them well enough. Getting to see them all in person was extremely helpful, especially when trying to differentiate between the many Dreams properties.

A Unique Option: Dreams Jade
While Dreams Jade was not one of our top overall favorites from the trip, it does offer something very unique that is worth highlighting for destination weddings.
First, the entire property is 100% handicap accessible, which is a huge benefit for couples who need that level of accessibility for themselves or their guests.
It also has a different overall vibe compared to most family-friendly resorts. Even though it is technically a family resort, it tends to feel more like an adults-only property and is actually quite popular with honeymooners and couples.
This makes it a really good option if you want more of an adults-only feel for your wedding, but still want to allow kids to attend. It doesn’t have the same high-energy, kid-focused atmosphere as some other family resorts, so you’re not going to feel like there are kids everywhere, but your guests can still bring theirs if needed.
