What to Pack for a Tropical Vacation
Whether you are preparing for your first trip to the Caribbean or consider yourself a seasoned veteran, packing for vacation can feel like a daunting task. We believe every day leading up to your vacation should bring growing excitement, not stress!
To ease your packing woes, we have constructed the ultimate packing list for Caribbean vacations! Including everything from appropriate dinner attire to lip balm with SPF, this list of things to bring will ensure a relaxing vacation.

1. Essentials for the Airport
Travel Documents
These are the absolute most important things you need to get to the Caribbean. Your passport and plane ticket should be tucked in a secure and easily accessible area such as carry-on or purse packets. Keep in mind that passports are absolutely required for Caribbean travel, and you will be denied flight service without one.
Well-Packed Carry On
Pack your carry on with any items that would be essential within 24 hours of travel. This includes prescriptions, toiletries, a change of clothing and shoes, and definitely a bathing suit! With international travel, luggage can be delayed for up to a day. A well-equipped carry on will leave you lounging poolside, and stress free, while waiting for your suitcase.
TSA-Approved Locks
The only thing more upsetting than lost luggage is a suitcase that has been ransacked. Equip your belongings with TSA approved locks to prevent any property loss. We recommend combination locks to eliminate that devastating epiphany of “I forgot the keys at home.”

2. Dressing for the Caribbean
Lightweight Clothing
The average temperature in the Caribbean is 82˚F, so account for the heat and humidity while packing. For day-to-day activities, pack a variety of shorts and polos for men, and dresses, skirts, and loose tops for women. Avoid very revealing clothing. For dinner, men should bring at least one pair of long pants and a sundress or long skirt for women. Some restaurants will have a mandatory dress code; so a few conservative pieces won’t hurt. Note: Their is no dress code at Bluefields Bay Villas (which is one of the things our visitors love about staying here. Leave the suit and tie at home and relax!)
Comfortable Shoes
You will need a pair of sneakers, sandals, water shoes and dress shoes to equip you for vacation. Flip flops will accommodate you for the majority of your vacation, and the remaining will keep you protected and properly dressed for other activities.
Bathing Suits
Multiple bathing suits, got that? They take longer to dry in Jamaican humidity, and there’s nothing worse than pulling on a damp suit. Swimwear doesn’t take up much room in your suitcase, so just pack them in! Did we say multiple?
Light Jacket & Umbrella: In some areas of the Caribbean, you’ll get a little rain almost every day. Pack a lightweight umbrella to keep yourself comfortable. If you’re traveling in the winter months, you may find a light jacket comforting as temperatures take a slight dip in the evening.
Clothing NOT to Pack
We mentioned previously that revealing and skimpy clothing is not ideal for your Caribbean getaway. Take note that camouflage clothing is strictly prohibited, and even illegal in some Caribbean areas, so just leave all these at home.

3. There Will be Sun!
Sunblock
Bring as much sunblock as you can, and bring more than you think you will use. Choose waterproof sunblock from varying levels of SPF, and encourage everyone in your travel group to pack in excess too. You will undoubtedly be enjoying the sun, and running out will cost you a pretty penny to stock up. Just do it, your skin will thank you!
Aloe Vera
Whether you planned on it or not, there will inevitably be some sunburn on the horizon. Packing a bottle of aloe will help relieve the pain without the additional wallet pain of buying a bottle in Jamaica. Don’t get mistaken for the lobster you’ll be enjoying for dinner!
Lip balm with SPF
Burnt lips? Ouch! Bring along a moisturizing lip balm that has SPF. It will help protect you from the sun, and also relieve lips in the chance they do become sun burnt.
Bug Spray
Some of us are just more prone to itchy, scratchy bug bites than others are. Pack a bottle or two along to keep you from smacking away the insects. And I’m sure some unlucky soul will thank you for thinking of it when they forget themselves.
Sunglasses & Hats: We clearly think you should pack as much sun protection as possible. A wide rimmed hat will keep the sun from burning your face. Sunglasses, with SPF protection, will also protect your eyes from the fun you’re going to have in the sun.

4. All the Extras
Waterproof Cases & Bags
Ziploc bags are perfect for keeping things dry and preventing bottle spills in your beach bag, and trash bags are great for keeping everything in your bag protected from water activities. For cameras and electronics that can’t risk any contact with water, purchase a waterproof case that is airtight.
Snorkel Gear: If you plan on snorkeling or find yourself even mildly drawn to the idea of it, bring your own snorkel gear. It will definitely be much cheaper, and in some cases more sanitary, than renting from your resort or buying them in Jamaica. Note: We provide snorkel gear to all of our visitors.
Extra Duffel Bag
Bringing an extra bag along is great for a couple reasons: it gives you a beach bag to carry along during the day, and you now have room to bring home souvenirs instead of cramming them in your carry-on.

The stunning Caribbean beaches are fairly easy to get to for us Midwesterners and East Coasters. With white sand, turquoise water, and magnificent views, what more could you ask for? We’ve rounded up our favorite beaches in the Caribbean, below, plus where to stay to take advantage of each.

1. Grace Bay
Turks and Caicos
Turks and Caicos is easily one of the most beautiful groups of Caribbean islands you’ll find, with a number of stunning beaches. The beach at Grace Bay, however, is on a whole different level! The snorkeling and scuba diving is unbeatable here, and if you’re not really a water person you can still get your underwater fix at the Coral Gardens snorkeling park.
Where to Stay: We recommend staying at the 4.5-Star Seven Stars Resort in Turks & Caicos. This resort does not offer an all-inclusive option, but you can opt for the European Plan for 2 adults for 3 nights starting at $1,493.

2. Eagle Beach
Aruba
Aruba is different from a lot of the Caribbean islands because it’s turquoise water and white sands sit in direct contracts to the desert hills in the background. Eagle Beach is the perfect place to enjoy these unique views. Also unique to this beach are the famous bending fofoti trees, pictured above.
Where to Stay: One of our favorite resorts in Aruba that is also within walking distance of Eagle Beach, is the 4-Star, All-Inclusive Hotel Riu Palace Aruba. 2 adults can stay here for 3 nights starting at $1,763.

3. Playa Coson
Las Terrenas, Samana, Dominican Republic
The Dominican Republic has become a hotspot for tourists in the Caribbean. In order to take advantage of the best beaches in the DR, you must venture a bit farther north. Many of the best beaches are located in the former fishing village of Las Terrenas. “El Coson”, as it is referred to by the locals, is the most isolated and stunning of all Las Terrenas’ beaches.
Where to Stay: Stay in the Samana area of the Dominican Republic for easy access to Playa Coson. We suggest staying at the 5-Star Luxury Bhia Principe Cayo Levantado Don Pablo Collection All-Inclusive resort. This resort is nestled on it’s very own private island. 2 people can stay here for 3 nights starting at $1,007.

4. Seven Mile Beach
Negril, Jamaica
Seven Mile Beach is one of the more well-known Caribbean beaches on this list, but no less stunning. Go to Negril in order to see this long stretch of white sand, and stay for the laid-back, hippie-esque vibe you’ll find on this friendly island. Plus, this beach is home to the famous Negril Cliffs, where adrenaline-seekers can climb 30 feet to the top and dive directly into the Caribbean Sea.
Where to Stay: We suggest you stay at the 5-Star, All-Inclusive Royalton Negril Resort & Spa. This resort is family-friendly, but they also have an adults-only section called The Hideaway. 2 people can stay here for 3 nights starting at $1,256.

5. Buck Island
Saint Croix, USVI
Saint Croix itself is fairly secluded, but Buck Island is even more so. It is located 30 minutes by boat from mainland Saint Croix, and the island is a national preserve. It is one of the top snorkeling spots in the world, with crystal clear waters and incredible coral reefs.
Where to Stay: Again, Saint Croix is rather private, and we would actually suggest staying on St. Thomas or St. John for more options in accommodations and more things to do. Then you can take a ferry directly to Buck Island or get there by stopping on Saint Croix first. In St. Thomas, we suggest staying at the 4-Star, All-Inclusive Bolongo Bay. 2 people can stay here for 3 nights starting at $1,419.

In addition, guests will love the newly-renovated lobby, restaurants, and world-class spa.

We love experiencing new resorts throughout Mexico and the Caribbean, but there are a few classic all-inclusive properties that we keep going back to. Read on for our list of the 5 best “oldies but goodies”.

Moon Palace
We have been proud partners of Palace Resorts since we opened our doors in the early 90’s. Our family has stayed at Moon Palace several times and there’s a reason we keep going back and always recommend it to our clients. In fact, there are several reasons! For one thing, this classic all-inclusive resort in Cancun, Mexico has something for everyone. With 2,130 rooms and 4 complexes, it is one of the largest resorts in the Cancun and Riviera Maya area.
During our family’s last visit in March of 2018, we stayed at The Grand at Moon Palace. This is a brand new section of Moon Palace, and offers a step above when it comes to luxury and service. You’ll still have access to everything on the main property, but you’ll also be able to experience exclusive restaurants, pools, and elevated service.

Sandals Montego Bay
This list would not be complete without mentioning the uber-romantic Sandals Resorts. We have worked with Sandals Resorts since we opened our doors and we always suggest these properties for destination weddings and honeymoons. Sandals Montego Bay is actually the original Sandals property, so of course we had to include it on this list of classic all-inclusive resorts. The property is located on the most exclusive, private white-sand beach in Jamaica, where offshore reefs create the calmest waters for leisure swims. Despite it being a classic, it has been completely re-imagined and modernized. However, it still maintains its classic charm and we love sending our clients here.

Hilton Playa del Carmen (formerly The Royal Playa del Carmen)
The Hilton Playa del Carmen has been re-branded from the former The Royal Playa del Carmen. If you stayed at The Royal in the past, you can expect the same classic all-inclusive resort with Hilton’s unprecedented level of service. This is a great option for groups or couples because it is exclusively for adults. In fact, this is the first adults-only all-inclusive property that I stayed at with my family when I turned 18!
One of the very best things about this classic all-inclusive property is it’s location. It is located just steps from Playa del Carmen’s famed Fifth Avenue. Here you’ll find uneatable nightlife, dining, and shopping. It’s proximity to the action makes it an ideal property for those that want to venture off property.

Riu Palace Cabo San Lucas & Riu Santa Fe
Riu properties are a great budget-friendly option if you are looking for the classic all-inclusive experience in Cabo. Conveniently, Riu Palace Cabo San Lucas and Riu Santa Fe are located directly next to each other on Medano Beach. This is one of the best locations in Cabo San Lucas! In fact, you can walk Medano Beach directly to the downtown area in about 25-30 minutes. We did just that when we stayed at Riu Palace Cabo San Lucas for my stepbrother’s wedding in 2017.
Riu Santa Fe offers more of a party atmosphere and has a lower price point as well. We helped one of my friends and her now-husband plan their joint bachelorette/bachelor party here and it was absolutely perfect. As stated above, my stepbrother and his wife got married at Riu Palace Cabo San Lucas, and we highly recommend it for brides and grooms planning a destination wedding. Also important to note is that guests of Riu Palace Cabo San Lucas have access to Riu Santa Fe, including all of their pools, bars, and restaurants.

Sandals South Coast
Formerly Sandals Whitehouse, Sandals South Coast is located in Whitehouse, Jamaica. We love this property and so do our clients! To make this classic even more appealing, you can now book one of their all-new Over-the-Water Bungalows! In addition, the property has an overwater bar and a romantic Over-the-Water Chapel for destination weddings. Not only is Sandals South Coast set on a 2-mile stretch of Jamaica’s most pristine white-sand beach, it is also nestled within a 500-acre nature preserve. In addition, it has three pools, including Jamaica’s largest. And the overwater bar isn’t the only new place to eat and drink! You can also enjoy the brand new Sushi on the Sand restaurant right on the beach.

While Europe and other destinations may be off limits to Americans right now, you can still make a dent in your Caribbean bucket list in 2020!

Antigua
Antigua gets a lot of buzz amongst travelers, and for good reason! It has a bevy of new hotels including brands like Rosewood and Waldorf Astoria, plus a brand new airport. Plus, it has some of the Caribbean’s greatest all-inclusive resorts including the hot new Hammock Cove and other faves like Curtain Bluff and Galley Bay.

Virgin Gorda, British Virgin Islands
The British Virgin Islands is one of the Caribbean’s leading sailing destinations, but even non-sailors can find plenty to love about the islands. You’ll find plenty to do and see in the BVI – especially in places like Virgin Gorda. Here you’ll find amazing street food and world-class eateries like CocoMaya. Plus, boutique hotels like Mango Bay and the new-look Fischers Cove are accompanied by stunning luxury villas here.

Little Cayman, Cayman Islands
Located just a half-hour away from Grand Cayman is Little Cayman. Here you’ll find the true castaway fantasy and feel as though you’ve been transported to the Caribbean as it once was. There are less than 200 people here on most days, and that tiny-island personality, makes for an unforgettable trip. Plus, choose from two stunning hotels: the Southern Cross Club and the Little Cayman Beach Resort.

St. Barth
Looking for the perfect luxury vacation in the Caribbean? Book a flight to San Juan, take a Tradewind flight to St Barth, stay in a villa with WIMCO or St Barth Properties and thank us later. In addition, St Barth is just about heaven in the Caribbean, plain and simple.

St. Kitt’s Southeast Peninsula
The Park Hyatt St Kitts is a destination in and of itself, a new kind of luxury resort for the region. But its home, the luxe Christophe Harbour development on St Kitts’ lush Southeast Peninsula is a destination, too, from its splendid marina to the SALT Plage beach bar to the nearby Cockleshell Bay which has become a Mecca for Caribbean beach lovers.

St. Thomas, US Virgin Islands
St. Thomas is home to the new Marriott Frenchman’s Reef and the highly-anticipated Noni Beach. These are both part of Marriott’s Autograph Collection. In addition, you’ll find a diverse selection of hotels ranging from the wonderful Bolongo Bay Beach Resort to the newly-reimagined Ritz-Carlton.

Curacao
While its colorful, historic downtown is instantly recognizable, many still don’t realize that Curacao is one of the Caribbean’s sexiest, most cosmopolitan destinations. In addition, it’s a pervasive kind of cool, one that extends from sandy hotspots like Jan Thiel Beach and Mambo Beach to what just may be our favorite luxury hotel in the Caribbean, the Baoase Luxury Resort.
