The Best Senior Travel Discounts, and Where to Find Them

If you are over the age of 65 in the US (or age 60 in the rest of the world), there are a wide variety of travel discounts available to you. Some airlines offer senior fares, as do many large US hotel chains and independent hotels. An important note from this article is that in order to take advantage of senior travel discounts at hotels, you must book with a travel agent or directly with the hotel rather than through an online travel agency such as Expedia. Working with a travel agent ensures you are getting the full discount you are entitled to.

Secrets 4

Our travel specialist Mandi Schlautman just returned from a fun-filled family getaway in Costa Rica! Read on for her honest review of Secrets Papagayo, the Buena Vista Tour, and a day spent in the town of Tamarindo.

Secrets 3

Secrets Papagyo

Mandi stayed with her family at Secrets Papagayo, an AM Resort in Costa Rica. This was her first time staying at an AM Resort, and she loved everything about it. She ranked this a 5/5 on how likely she’d be to recommend this property for her clients! “The service at Secrets was amazing! Everyone was so friendly and accomodating. It is only 20 minutes from the airport which was nice too.”

When asked for a negative on the resort, Mandi pointed out that the resort is very hilly and requires a lot of walking to get around. While not exactly a bad thing, it wouldn’t be great for every traveler.

Mandi ranked both the food and the rooms as a 4/5, and ranked the resort overall as a 5/5.

Secrets 2

Buena Vista Tour

Mandi describes the Buena Vista Tour as “a must for clients going to Costa Rica!” In fact, this was her second time doing the action-packed tour. The tour includes 9 zip lines, a jungle water slide, lunch, horseback riding, and hot water springs.

Secrets 1

Tamarindo

Mandi’s favorite part of her Costa Rica trip was Mother’s Day spent in the town of Tamarindo. She and her family started the day with mass at a local Catholic church in the town. After that, they walked to a restaurant on the beach that was owned by a California couple who also run a surfing company and resort.

We love planning family vacations for our clients, and an all-inclusive vacation with kids can be great! Before kids, an all-inclusive was simple: fly, go through customs, grab a welcome drink, and relax by the beach or pool for a week. With kids, it takes a bit more planning. With the right preparation – and preferably the right travel agent – your trip will be just as easy and enjoyable.

We know vacation planning can be stressful, but taking the right steps can make a big difference in how much you enjoy your stay. Read our tips below to get the most out of your stay.

Guide to a Vacation at an All-Inclusive with Kids

What to Pack

  1. Before we get started, there are a few things that you should pack for your stay at an all-inclusive with kids. These include:
    • Tons of sunscreen – you don’t want to purchase this at the gift shop! You will pay a lot more at your resort for sunscreen than you will at home.
    • Medicine & bandages – another item you don’t want to purchase at your destination.
    • Yetis or other portable mugs to keep your drinks cold
    • Floating toys and some extra toys for the hotel room.
  2. Dress Codes: Talk to your travel agent about dress codes before you pack and travel. The different dress code names at each property can be confusing. For example, “resort casual” can mean different things at different resorts. For the most part, it means you can’t wear your swimsuit and cover-up, cut-off shorts, or flip-flops to any of the fancy restaurants on the property.
  3. Don’t be afraid to overpack underwear. While packing light is ideal for most things, underwear is the exception, especially on an all-inclusive vacation with kids.. We recommend packing two pairs per day so you always have a pair for before the pool or beach and afterward. If you are going somewhere especially hot or humid, pack more.

Family Beach Vacation

Other Things to Know Before You Go

  1. Make sure to ask your Enchanted Travel agent to book a shuttle for you from the airport to the resort. You will want to do this before you leave and your travel agent should include this in your package.
  2. Ask for a list of scheduled activities for the kids when you check in. Many all-inclusive resorts have kids and teen clubs, but a lot of these properties also have planned activities for children that don’t require them to be dropped off at the kids club. Examples include special activities in the pool, kids silent discos, and more.
  3. Make sure you ask about baby gear and supplies in advance. Your Enchanted Travel agent can help you find a resort that specifically caters to young kids and will have more supplies than others. For example, the Grand Palladium Punta Cana offer a wide assortment of baby products like formulas, food, diapers and toys. This is just one example of a very family-friendly all-inclusive resort with kids supplies. Your Enchanted Travel agent can give you many more options.

Food, Drinks & Tipping

Remember to check the dress codes at your resort, as they usually apply to specific restaurants. You won’t be turned away from every place if you don’t have the right shoes, but it’s best to be prepared. Pack at least one pair of closed-toe shoes for each person and a shirt with buttons for every male, adult, or child. For women and girls, bring something other than flip-flops and swimsuit cover-ups.

Make sure to bring a lot of American bills for tips. Even at all-inclusive resorts, tips are usually welcomed. Tipping can lead to better service at the pools and bars. Often, the staff will recognize you from day to day and remember how much you tipped them before. You don’t have to tip a ton; we usually advise a larger tip for your first drink at the pool, about $5-10 depending on how many you are ordering. After that, tip $1-2 per drink on the next few rounds. At meals, tip $1-5 for breakfast or lunch and $5-20 for dinner. Maybe throw in a few more bucks for a messy table from your kids!

We LOVE Jamaica

Friendly, Laid-back Locals

First, let’s take some time to talk about why we absolutely love sending our clients to Jamaica. First off, the people are some of the kindest you will meet. They are laid-back, friendly, and fun-loving. This is true of the entire staff at Moon Palace Jamaica, as well as anyone you can expect to encounter off of your resort.

Club Mobay

One tip we like to share with every client we send to Jamaica is to purchase a Club Mobay pass. A Club Mobay pass expedites you to the front of the immigration and customs lines when you first arrive in Jamaica. You’ll be greeted by a host who meets you from your plane and walks you through customs and immigration. Then they will guide you to the Club Mobay Lounge to wait for transportation to your resort. Here you’ll find snacks, drinks, comfortable seating, and friendly service. They’ll let you know when your transportation has arrived and handle your bags until then. The pass costs $50 per person for arrival only and $80 per person for arrival and departure.

Perfect Beach Weather

Another reason we love Jamaica is the gorgeous tropical warm weather. With an average temp of 81° F, you can visit the beaches of Jamaica at any time of the year.

One-of-a-kind Culture

Besides the friendly locals and beautiful weather, we also can’t get enough of the Jamaican culture. In fact, hospitality is one of the aspects of Jamaican culture that sets it apart from other countries. In addition, Jamaica embraces amazing food and music. You can learn about the history and culture of Jamaica at many cultural spots included the Bob Marley Museum and Devon House.

We LOVE Moon Palace Jamaica

Great for Families

We are constantly recommending this property for families because there is so much for kids to do here. The main pool has a huge water slide, for starters. This is known as the “Activity Pool”. You’ll also find tons of daily entertainment here like trivia and dance contests. The property also has a Splash Park that is great for kids ages 1-4.

moon palace jamaica beach

The beach here is also great for small children. It is quiet and private. In addition, the water is shallow and there aren’t any large waves. There are also tons of water activities for kids at the beach on property. You can take your kids sailing or kayaking, and they can use the water bikes and paddleboards as often as they want – it’s all included.

moon palace jamaica flow rider

The Flow Rider is another big attraction for kids. This is a simulated surfing experience for all ages. It’s harder than it looks but once you try it once, you’ll want to keep trying until you master it.

moon palace jamaica wired

Your kids will also love the Wired Lounge on the property. This is for kids of all ages, and you can drop the kids off here with their staff who are very hands-on. Here you’ll find a snack bar that serves ice cream and slushies all day, video games, air hockey, and a movie room.

Incredible Food

moon palace jamaica food

Moon Palace Jamaica is home to 7 restaurants. Momo is a Hibachi restaurant that is open for dinner nightly. You do need reservations here and men must wear long pants and closed toed shoes (including children). You will also need to make reservations and adhere to the dress code at Gondola, Moon Palace Jamaica’s fine dining Italian restaurant. Gondola is also only open for dinner.

For daytime, head to Buccaneers Reef. This is a full-service buffet restaurant open to breakfast, lunch and dinner. You’ll find about 40+ food options for each meal here. This is a great choice for families with picky eaters or different tastes.

moon palace jamaica restaurant

Pier 8 was my favorite! This seafood restaurant sits right on the edge of the ocean and they have a great kids menu. It is open for breakfast, lunch and dinner and serves a variety of seafood, steaks and salads.

Sundeck Grill & Bar also overlooks the ocean. Menu items include pizza, pasta, steaks, salads, and soups.

In addition to the fab specialty restaurants, there is also a snack bar located next to the activity pool. Here you can order hamburgers, hot dogs, nachos, etc. For more snacks and sweets, head to Boulangerie. This bake shop and cafe is open 24 hours and a great place to grab coffee in the morning. Gourmet Corner is located across the hall from Boulangerie and serves sushi, pizza and paninis. In addition, there is 24-hour room service here for all guests. You’ll also find 3 bars including the Piano Bar, Loud Bar, and the Noir Dance Club.

Other things we love about the resort

In addition to the friendly staff, top notch dining, and kid-friendly activities, there are a few other things to note about this property that set it apart.

moon palace jamaica spa

The Awe Spa is an incredible spa on the property. I had a great massage here and would highly recommend it. You can use your resort credits to pay for services here – ask your Enchanted Travel expert for more details on this. The fitness center here is also great and open from 6 AM to 10 PM.

The nightly entertainment here is also great, especially for families. They have live shows every night starting at 9 PM.

August is known to be one of the very hottest months of the year in many areas of the world. Find the ideal spot to cool off with our list of the best water parks in the world, including those in the United States and internationally. Read on for our top picks!

1. Universal’s Volcano Bay Water Theme Park

Orlando, Florida

Universal’s Volcano Bay in Orlando, Florida opened it’s doors in May of 2017. Our Disney & Orlando Travel Expert Andy Baker just visited this thrilling water theme park earlier this summer with his family. Volcano Bay replaced Wet ‘n Wild as Universal Orlando Resort’s premier water park. One great innovation you’ll find and love at the park is the TapuTapu wristband technology. This wristband holds your place in line so you can spend less time waiting in line and more time enjoying the park. Families and singles alike will love the private cabanas, massive Waturi Beach pool and the resort’s tiki bars. We suggest making time to order off the tropical-inspired menu at Kohola Reef. Order the veggie burger – you can thank us later!

2. Adventure Waterpark

Atlantis, Bahamas

Adventure Waterpark, located in the Paradise Island Resort in the Bahamas, is a unique adventure in water theme parks. What makes it so unique? For one thing, the “Leap of Faith” slide. This almost-vertical slide shoops you straight down a clear tube through a shark-filled lagoon. Yes, you read that correctly – real, live sharks! In addition to this thrilling ride, you’ll find almost a dozen pools and many more fast-paced slides. In addition, the water park is home to one of the most beautiful lazy rivers. The tropical lazy river streams through a lush oasis for those that aren’t too keen on shooting through a tube surrounded by sharks.

If you aren’t staying at Paradise Island Resort, you are able to purchase a day pass to visit the massive water park. Keep in mind that these do go by fast and should be purchased in advance as the park is extremely popular with cruise ships who port close to the resort. Ask your Enchanted Travel agent about purchasing a day pass for you when you book your Bahamas vacation.

3. Waterbom Bali

Bali, Indonesia

Most think of peaceful yoga retreats when they think of Bali. However, at Waterbom Bali you’ll find endless amounts of fun and excitement in the sun. Waterbom Bali is rated one of the best water parks in the world by TripAdvisor. One of the biggest draws is the extreme slide called the Climax. On the Climax, sliders stand in a small chamber over a slide that is so seemingly vertical that a trap door opens to drop you nearly straight down. Only true daredevils should partake in this 2.5 G-force speed slide! It is definitely not for the faint of heart.

4. World Waterpark

Alberta, Canada

World Waterpark in Alberta is home to the world’s largest indoor wave pool. The park encompasses an area of four football fields. Here you’ll find nine indoor water slides, plus a 10-story bungee jump that plunges you over the wave pool. Located directly next to the largest shopping mall in North America (yes, bigger than Mall of America!), World Waterpark is a great weekend getaway for families. Plus, since it is indoors, it is a great place to visit no matter the season or the weather conditions outside.

5. Wet ‘n’ Wild

Oahu, Hawaii

Hawaii has so much to offer in terms of adventure and excitement, but if you want to add a water park to your itinerary, Wet ‘n’ Wild is the place to be. Located near the famous Waikiki Beach, it is easily accessible from many great family resorts. Here you’ll find 25 acres of water-fueled fun including the Shaka, a 30 MPH water half pipe. The Shaka drops tubers down a 70-degree incline, then shoots you up the other side. The Tornado is another thrilling slide for adventurers. Not only is it adrenaline-pumping, but it offers stunning views of Oahu as you’re catapulted 50 feet through the air.
