5 Things You Can’t Miss When Visiting Kauai

On our most recent trip, we had the privilege of calling Kauai “home”. We had an entire week to explore the island’s mysterious caves and grottos, try local cuisine, and marvel at the legendary Hawaiian sunsets. After fitting as many activities as we could into each day, we thought we’d share a few of the things that you just can’t miss when visiting Hawaii’s “Garden Isle”. Check out the highlights of our trip below!

1. Fern Grotto

Only accessible by boat (we toured with Smith’s Kauai), Fern Grotto is one of Kauai’s most famous landmarks. It is located on the windward side of the island, which is known for being extraordinarily lush. Covered in an abundance of flourishing ferns, it’s easy to see why this lava rock grotto is an extremely popular spot for weddings and vow renewals.

While visitors are no longer permitted to climb up into the grotto due to new safety and environmental regulations in place, there is still an option to see the grotto by kayak for those seeking a little more adventure than the standard tour!

2. Waimea Canyon

Also known as “The Grand Canyon of the Pacific”, Waimea Canyon offers a striking view of plant life, rust-colored soil, and a towering waterfall. It took about 20-minutes to drive to the top, and the trip was completely worth it. Waimea Canyon is known for its ever-changing views, depending on the clouds and time of day you make your visit.

3. Napali Coast

Seeing the Napali Coast by boat was probably the most memorable experience of our trip. Our tour was hosted by Captain Andy’s, and we loved every minute of it!

Altogether the tour was about six hours long, and approximately 80 miles roundtrip. Throughout the cruise, we were lucky enough to spot pods of spinner dolphins, snorkel the beautiful coral reef, and see the coast’s dramatic spires. This is a tour that definitely lives up to all of the hype, so be sure to make it a priority during your stay.

4. Mountain Tubing in Hanamaulu

One of the most unique excursions on the island of Kauai is the mountain tubing tour in Hanamaulu with Kauai Back Country. This tour is a “lazy river” of sorts that winds through the irrigation canals of old sugar plantations, which also means passing through tunnels that are almost 60 feet below ground! This activity lasts about two hours total, with unforgettable glimpses of the Lihue area. We would recommend this excursion to anyone and everyone looking for an off-the-beaten-path adventure while you’re there.

5. Kalamaku Luau

Of course, the list wouldn’t be complete without detailing our favorite luau of the trip. Even the locals will tell you that the Kalamaku Luau is a must! This luau is a bit different than a standard luau, with more of a  “Cirque du Soleil” vibe. The performance itself lasted about an hour and told the story of how Kauai was first settled. We got the chance to try Poi for the first time during this luau and highly recommend it to any foodies!

We can hardly wait to pay Kauai another visit, and will be living through our camera roll until then. Have any recommendations that we need to get added to our list for next time? Let us know in the comments!

A trip to Hawaii is unlike any other experience! Most people simply picture a beautiful beach destination, but the Aloha state offers much more. One thing we love is the endless array of Hawaii sites and activities. Hawaii has options for those looking for an adrenaline-filled adventure or a relaxing getaway. Below we show you our top nine favorite Hawaii sites.

1. Sunrise at Haleakala – Maui

The desert-like landscape surrounding Maui’s highest peak at Haleakala is best seen during sunrise. We suggest making a reservation (which is now required) for your first or second morning in Hawaii while your body is still used to an earlier time zone. For sunrise and sunset times, as well as drive times, this chart is helpful.

2. The Road to Hana – Maui

The Road to Hana is among the most famous of Hawaii sites. Hana Highway (Hwy. 36) runs 50 miles past taro patches, lush rainforests, waterfalls and botanical gardens. You may consider staying overnight in Hana. If not, we suggest arriving before sunrise and returning after sunrise to avoid traffic. Do your research (or consult your travel agent) to narrow down the Hana sites you want to see along the route. Our favorite stops include Honomanu Bay Lookout and Upper Waikani (Three Bears) Falls.

3. Polynesian Cultural Center – Oahu

Travelers interested in immersing themselves in the island cultures of Hawaii need not look any further than the Polynesian Cultural Center. The cultural center is home to the award-winning Ali’i Luau. The Luau offers travelers a lesson on Hawaii’s royalty as well as a traditional Hawaiian meal and entertainment. During the day, the lagoon is open for canoe tours and the Hukilau Marketplace is open for you to browse Polynesian goods. In addition to the Luau, the new show “Ha: Breath of Life” features Samoan fire knife dancing.

4. USS Arizona Memorial at Pearl Harbor – Honolulu

Built in 1962 to honor the 1,102 military personnel who lost their lives during the attack on Pearl Harbor, the USS Arizona Memorial is likely the most visited of all the Hawaii sites on the list. Entry to the memorial is free but a ticket is required. 1300 tickets are given out on a first-come, first served basis at the Pearl Harbor Visitor Center every day. You can also pre-book a free ticket here up to 2 months in advance. Plan to spend a whole day at Pearl Harbor, which is home to a few other family-friendly attractions including the USS Bowfin Submarine Museum & Park and the Battleship Missouri Memorial.

5.  Hawaii Volcanoes National Park – The Big Island

Hawaii Volcanoes National Park is home to Kilauea, which is one of the greatest volcanoes in the world. We suggest taking Crater Rim Road, which spans 11 miles and circles, Kilaue Caldera. The Kilauea Caldera region is the most accessible part of the park. Crater Rim Road takes you past many of the top attractions of the park including Devastation Trail, Jagger Museum, and Thurston Lava Tube.

6. Whale Watching – Maui

Each year, thousands of North Pacific Humpback whales make their Winter migration through the North Pacific Ocean. This occurs between November and May and Maui is the best place in Hawaii for whale watching. During peak months you should be able to see the whales right from your hotel room lanai (balcony/deck) or while on the beach. The stretch of Highway 30 between Ma’alaea and Lahaina is one of the best roads to see Humpback Whales.

7. Snorkeling and Scuba at Molokini Crater – Maui

Molokini, located three miles off Maui’s southern coast, is considered one of Hawaii’s best dive spots. Expect crystal-clear waters and endless colorful fish, as this Hawaii site is home to 250 fish species. The crescent shape of the islet provides a barrier from currents which is great for beginner snorkelers. Scuba is also popular here because it offers areas for divers of all skill levels and experience. Book a half or full-day boat tour with an early morning departure for best viewing conditions.

8. Shangri La – Oahu

For a unique history-filled Hawaii site, tour Shangri La on Oahu. The former home of Doris Duke, an American philanthropist, and heir to a huge tobacco tycoon, is now the Center for Islamic Arts and Culture. Her home is decorated with inspiration from her worldly travels including Lebanon and Egypt. While touring you can meet Islamic scholars and artists, and learn more about Doris Duke and her life.

9. Na Pali Coast State Wilderness Park – Kauai

Surely this list of Top Hawaii Sites would not be complete without mentioning the Na Pali Coastline. The coast boasts lavishly flowing waterfalls and freshwater rivers and is rich in Hawaiian history. It has remained somewhat authentic and raw because it is only reachable by foot or boat. The best options for exploring this area is by boat or by foot. Ask your travel agent to help you find a sunset dinner cruise or a scuba excursion to the Na Pali Coastline. Another option for exploring is by foot through the Kalalau Trail, which runs 22 miles roundtrip. Here you will see natural waterfalls and streams, dramatically rugged coastlines and two gorgeous beaches; Hanakap’ai and Kalalau Beach.

If you and your future spouse like the idea of a relaxing destination wedding but don’t know where or how to start, we can help!

Below are the best tips for making your dream destination wedding a reality.

new jewel

1. Hire a pro

Enchanted Travel can help you in picking out the perfect destination for your upcoming nuptials.  Travel specialists plan excursions for groups of two to 2,000, and ensure that guests of all ages are comfortable and well-accommodated. They handle all of your guests’ travel needs so you are freed from the role of travel-agent-bride-or-groom. Instead you can focus on wedding details and your only role is husband or wife.

Our agents are destination wedding specialists. We have been planning destination weddings for over twenty years! Our agents have visited all of the best resorts and locations for destination weddings in Hawaii, Mexico, the Caribbean, and Jamaica.

Travel specialists have access to thousands of dollars in group discounts. We will present the options to you upfront to help you anticipate the full cost of your destination wedding with no surprises.

At Enchanted Honeymoons, we also provide free wedding invitations for your big day. You are able to add your picture and design the invitation to your liking. We also provide a wedding registry so your friends and family members can contribute to your big day or your honeymoon. Finally, we provide these and all of our services free of charge!

We are always in your corner, and are reachable by phone, text and e-mail while you and your group are traveling – yes, we are available 24/7 for your entire group from the time they book to the time they arrive back home.

2. Notify guests well in advance

This is one of the most important destination wedding tips. Not only will you want to give your loved ones ample time to check their schedule for your destination wedding date, but you will also want to make sure they have plenty of time to calculate whether or not they can accord the cost of traveling to your ceremony and reception. Working with Enchanted Honeymoons Travel ensures that you and your guests are prepared and have everything you need for the trip.

3. Visit in advance if possible

Ideally, you’d be able to visit your venue once before booking, but this is not always the case for destination weddings. Ask your travel agent at Enchanted Travel about discounts offered by certain hotels on stays before your wedding date. If your hotel doesn’t offer a discount and you are not able to visit your venue, just be sure to arrive a few days in advance of the ceremony and reception. This will allow you to change anything and will relieve some stress for your big day!

4. Pick the Perfect Spot

The location of your wedding determines not only the mood – whether you are going for sophisticated, beachy, or rustic – but also the travel, time and budget required to pull it off. Your wedding elements should say something about your personal style and your passions. Enchanted Honeymoons can help you choose the perfect setting for you – whether it’s a beach in Maui, a gazebo over the Caribbean, a private garden in St. Lucia, or a beautiful chapel in Jamaica.

5. Embrace the setting to save big

Slash both your decor and catering costs by choosing items that are native to your destination. Our agents at Enchanted Honeymoons Travel have been to all of the top destinations so we are able to relay first-hand what may work for your big day. For instance, consider having exotic flowers and plants in the tropics rather than, say, red roses. Serve local specialties at the reception, like jerk chicken in Jamaica or conch fritters in the Bahamas.

6. Choose your wedding dress based on your destination

Breathable fabrics work best in hot, humid locations such as the beach. Think lightweight lace in Mexico. On the other hand, some destinations were made for something more dramatic. For nuptials set in a villa in France, for instance, an embellished ball gown may be appropriate!

7. Never check your dress

Always carry your dress on board the plane, even if it means having to fold it. Just make sure someone at the other end can press and steam it!

8. Time it Right

Unfortunately, the best weather in popular destinations tends to be high  or heavy-tourist season, when there are typically more crowds, fewer hotels and venues available, and higher prices all around. If you choose to marry during high season, you’ll want to reserve hotel blocks and venues immediately and send out save-the-dates 10 to 12 months in advance so guests can book their flights and accommodations before prices skyrocket. Our agents at Enchanted Honeymoons Travel are all destination wedding specialists, so we will can help you choose the best time for your big day. If you choose the shoulder-season (right after high-season), you may be able to save yourself and your guests some money and still enjoy great weather. While the off-season will mean fewer crowds, the weather can be iffy, and you may find that many stores, venues and vendors close up shop.

9. Research Local Marriage Requirements

The legal side of tying the knot in a different country can be complicated. Many countries have a “residency requirement” (for example, 24 hours in Turks and Caicos and 7 days in England), which means you must reside in the country for a certain length of time before your ceremony. Although this is usually just a few days, it can be longer. France requires you to arrive at least 40 days before you marry! When in doubt, ask your travel agent!

Paia Fish Market tops off our list of the best Maui restaurants.  This gem is located just off the Road to Hana. It is a great place to dine in – try the fish tacos – or to buy fresh seafood & cook yourself if you have access to a kitchen. Reasonably priced. Favored by tourists and surfers.

Cafe Mambo is an open-air eatery with eclectic dishes and funky surfer vibes. The restaurant, bar and cafe is so popular that additional locations have opened in NYC and the Hamptons. Breakfast, lunch, and dinner menus feature upscale items with reasonable prices. We think the Kalua Duck Quesadillas sound delicious, but if you want something a little more “safe”, try the Classic BLT.

3. Cafe des Amis – Paia

Cafe des Amis is an Indian-Mediterranean fusion eatery serving dishes like savory and sweet crepe options (including these tofu and spinach crepes, pictured above), salads, and indian curries. Open for breakfast & brunch only.

Located oceanfront on the pier and open for breakfast and lunch only.

2. Pupukea Grill – North Shore

Pupukea Grill is a favorite Oahu restaurant for both visitors and locals, including many pro surfers. The grill serves plate lunches and non-traditional “lunch wagon” fare such as paninis, quesadillas, fish tacos, fish bowls, and shaved ice.

Kono’s is a family-run breakfast and lunch spot centrally located in historic Haleiwa on North Shore. Small, deli-like eatery allows takeaway and dine-in. Outdoor seating available.

4. Hukilau Cafe – East Oahu

Hukilau Cafe is a local hole in the wall  frequented by locals and visitors. This is a small, unfussy eatery serving local favorites like eggs and Portuguese sausage (pictured above) on disposable plates with plastic utensils.

5. Zippy’s – Ala Moana

Zippy’s is a quick & convenient Hawaiian-style fast food eatery. Items include regional specialties like lamb curry, tripe stew, and red endive eggs with warm ham (pictured above).  An affordable and local favorite. Update: this location closing at the end of April. It’s hard to find a destination that defines paradise quite like Hawaii. With exotic wildlife, dramatic seaside cliffs, lush vegetation, and a culture that is unlike anywhere else in the world, what more is there to ask for? However, every rose has its thorn, and Hawaii’s thorn happens to be that its remote location also makes it a very expensive destination to visit. Below are a few tips we’ve learned from our previous visits to help you save money and keep your next Hawaii trip within budget, while not missing out on any of its iconic attributes!

hawaii 1 hawaii 2 hawaii 3

1. Book Well in Advance

Last-minute deals are few and far between these days, especially to a place like Hawaii where the airfare stays pretty consistent. To secure the best rates and availability for your Hawaiian vacation, it’s best to book your trip about 7-9 months in advance.

2. Check the Menus Posted Outside of Restaurants

The easiest way to make sure that you don’t pay $25 for a cheeseburger while in Hawaii is to check the menus posted outside of the restaurant. By scoping out everything beforehand, you’ll be able to avoid anywhere extremely overpriced while also getting a good idea of how kid-friendly the dishes are.

3. Opt for Condo-Style Hotels

To keep your food and drink costs down, condo-style hotels that offer full kitchen amenities are a great option. With plenty of fruit stands and local markets, you can even try your hand at some Hawaiian recipes without breaking the bank.

4. Utilize Food Trucks

Some of the most affordable Hawaiian meals are offered by the tasty food trucks parked throughout the islands. Try the Portuguese Doughnut at Leonard’s Bakery or fish and shrimp tacos at Shark Pit (a couple of the favorites on Maui). Quick, affordable, and tasty!

5. Stay Across the Street from the Beach

While beachfront properties offer beautiful views and direct beach access, you can get a similar feel staying just across the street from the beach instead (at places like the Aston Waikiki Beach Tower or Embassy Suites Waikiki Beach Walk). Many of which still offer ocean views with a better price tag.

6. Travel to Hawaii During Off-Season

Traveling during off-season comes with many perks, the most obvious being cheaper hotel rates and airfare. To secure the best pricing, avoid traveling during peak travel times (winter season, holidays, spring break, etc.). Another perk of traveling when everyone else isn’t? Less tourists!
