5 Reasons Why Outdoor Enthusiasts Should Visit Costa Rica

After just a five night stay this past summer, we’re convinced that it doesn’t get much better than Costa Rica for exploring the great outdoors! The Guanacaste area of Costa Rica in particular truly gives you the best of both worlds. Here you can spend your mornings exploring the rainforest and your afternoons soaking up the sun on one of the many golden beaches!

Whether you’re into hiking, surfing, or simply taking in the tropical scenery, you’ll find it all and more in this exotic country. Check out our list below of the top five things that make Costa Rica an absolute paradise for outdoor enthusiasts.

1. Costa Rica’s Arenal Volcano National Park

Nestled between the Tilaran and Guanacaste mountain ranges, touring the Arenal Volcano National Park was probably the most memorable experience of our trip. Arenal Volcano itself is surrounded by lush rainforest, which means you’ll have to do some hiking to get a good glimpse. We felt that the hiking difficulty was intermediate, but it could be intimidating to beginner hikers. Often times, the very top of the volcano is hidden by clouds, but fortunately we were able to get an unobstructed view of the entire peak.

For our tour, we went with Central American Tours and we would highly recommend them! Our tour guides were extremely informative, fun, and always completely in-tune with the surroundings.

2. Village Hopping

Another perk of Costa Rica? It is the perfect destination for exploring with a car! Since the Guanacaste area is surrounded by small villages, it is really easy to arrange mini-trips during your stay to get the full experience. On our way to Arenal Volcano National Park, we pit-stopped in several villages that were along the route. Each village has its own unique personality, and all of them we visited felt very safe and clean. This is your chance to try some authentic specialities at the local cafes and restaurants!

For the true adventurist, a road trip to the capital city of San Jose is around a 3.5 hour drive from the Guanacste area. The atmosphere in this city is unlike any other in the country, with an endless selection of nightlife, restaurants, cafes, markets, and museums.

3. Surfing

If you’re an avid surfer or have always wanted to learn the sport, Costa Rica is the place to do it! With both options for beginner’s surf school and waves for the experts, be sure to check out Playa Grande, Malpais, and Playa Naranjo (otherwise known as Witches Rock).

4. Resort Variety

Costa Rica holds a wide variety of accommodations, from all-inclusive resorts, to standard hotels, and even bed and breakfasts. If you’re hoping to get in a good amount of beach time during your trip, an all-inclusive beachfront resort will definitely be the way to go! For independent travelers who aren’t set on staying by the beach, a European-plan hotel in the mountains might be right up your alley.

We stayed at the RIU Palace Costa Rica and toured several other resorts in the area, including The Westin Golf Resort & Spa, RIU Guanacaste, Occidental Grand Papagayo, and Andaz Peninsula Papagayo Resort.

5. Wildlife Unique to Costa Rica

Costa Rica will give you plenty of chances to catch glimpses of all sorts of wildlife. Don’t miss the Mounteverde Cloud Forest Biological Reserve, which houses more than 500 species of birds (including the vibrant Quetzal). In this reserve, you’ll also find over 3000 species of plants, many of which are orchid varieties. If you’re really lucky, you may even spot a white-faced monkey!

Ready to explore this tropical country for yourself? Here are a few of the things we wouldn’t visit Costa Rica without:

Paris is one of our favorite cities to visit. If you are traveling near France, we recommend making some time to visit this charming city. There is much to see, but we narrowed it down to our favorite can’t-miss sites for the ultimate 48 hours in the City of Lights.

France 3

Day One

With only 48 hours, you want to get up and out of your hotel room early! Start your morning with breakfast at Cafe de Flore. It’s the oldest coffeehouse in Paris, so you’ve likely seen a lot of breakfast posts on Instagram from this spot. Order a cup of chocolat chaud (hot chocolate) or coffee, a croissant with some jam, and watch Parisians frolic through the city as Paris starts her day.

Next, walk to the nearby Jardin du Luxembourg and stroll through the park, orchards, and rose garden. Make your way north toward the Pont de l’Archevêché. This bridge is behind Notre Dame, and thus it’s a very popular spot for photos. The bridge leads to a cobblestone pathway along the Seine, giving you a breathtaking backdrop of the famed Parisian cathedral. You may have seen this bridge covered in “love locks” not too long ago (they have since been removed).

Head inside the Notre Dame Cathedral and prepare to be astounded by the incredible architecture. Then it is a quick 5-minute walk to Sainte Chapelle, a royal chapel in Gothic-style. As you enter Sainte Chapelle, you’ll be immediately stunned by the beautiful stain glass windows throughout the church.

Across the street, take a quick peek inside the very quaint Shakespeare and Company. This bookstore is the oldest in France! From here it is a quick 10-minute walk to the Latin Quarter where you can stop for a glass of wine with excellent bread and cheese. If you did not make it to Cafe de Flore for breakfast this morning, it’s not too far from the Latin Quarter and open for lunch and dinner.

Next, hop on the Metro (much faster and cheaper than Uber or a taxi in Paris) and head toward the Louvre. You can’t come to Paris and not visit the Louvre! I’d purchase your tickets in advance to avoid the long line you’ll inevitably come across at any time of day to get in. After viewing the famous Mona Lisa, take another wine break at L’Ecluse Saint-Honoré.

Finally, stroll through the Jardin des Tuileries at sunset before it’s time to get ready for dinner. We highly recommend Le 39V near the Champs-Élysées. It’s a bit pricey, but the food and views are unbeatable. You can even catch a glimpse of the Eiffel Tower from the patio! It’s the perfect ending to a perfect first day.

Day Two

Breakfast should most definitely be had at Angelina’s. Indulge in the Angelina Breakfast option with hot chocolate. Then, hop on the Metro to Montmartre, which is our owner Lori’s favorite area in Paris. After that, get off at Lamarck/Caulaincourt station and head toward La Maison Rose. Next, pay a visit to the towering Basilique du Sacré-Cœur and overlook the sprawling city down below.

After taking in the sights of the city, start down the famous steps at Square Louise Michel and walk towards Le mur des je t’aime. This is also another highly popular spot for photos next to one of the most amazing creperies in the city—Crêperie Brocéliande. Here they have savory and sweet crêpes that cannot be missed.

Next, hop back on the metro and get off at Trocadéro station at the Palais de Chaillot. Cross the Jardins du Trocadéro and Pont d’Iéna toward the most famous landmark in all of Paris—the Eiffel Tower. Save precious time by buying your tickets online in advance to enjoy the birds-eye view of Paris from both viewing levels. Try taking the stairs down—it really is a trip!

If you chose to head to the Eiffel tower after leaving Montmartre, next check out the Arc de Triomphe for a spectacular view of the city. Then work your way back toward The Louvre for lunch at a place called Le Soufflé. After lunch, do some much needed retail therapy at Champs Elysses.

After shopping, we suggest having dinner at L’Absinthe (if they are serving the vegetable risotto, GET IT!). If it happens to be a Thursday night, make sure to go to the Musée d’Orsay for a late night museum visit. The museum is open until 9:45 pm on Thursdays, so we highly recommend taking advantage of that! Again, buy your tickets online.

Your Final Night

Lastly, to finish off your night, head back to the Eiffel Tower and enjoy the twinkling lights. You can catch them for the first 10-minutes of each hour. If you weren’t in the mood for dinner at L’Absinthe, opt for a six-course meal on the second floor of the Eiffel. Our owners Lori & Kem dined here on their most recent trip to Paris and deemed it a once in a lifetime experience. It’s splurge, but  incredible, and an ideal way to end an incredible trip to Paris. You will need to make reservations well in advance.

If you happen to find some downtime or are looking for alternative activities to the ones we mentioned above, some of our other favorites in the city of Paris include visiting the incredible Palace of Versailles, cruising the River Seine, and Musee d’Orsay.

Do you have any Paris favorites that we missed? Let us know in the comments!

It has been an interesting year, to say the least, in the travel industry. From airport power outages, to hurricanes and the ever-changing political climate, travelers have been bombarded with information on destinations all over the world. Below are some of the latest trends, and products, as well as upcoming changes you’ll see in the coming year.

The Best and Worst U.S. Airlines of 2017

You may be surprised to see that  Delta Air Lines comes in first in the annual Middle Seat scorecard ranking of the best and worst U.S. Airlines of 2017. Delta endured more than one passenger-stranding issue in 2017, including a scheduling fiasco during spring break, and a power outage at the world’s busiest airport, which is also one of Delta’s main hubs. However, they earned the top spot, even beating out Alaska Airlines as the top carrier, which has been No. 1 for the last four years.

This article includes details on each of the the eight major U.S. airlines as well as evidence to support their ranking, including the full scorecard used in the evaluation.

The best up-and-coming places to visit in 2018

TripAdvisor’s annual Travelers’ Choice awards, released earlier this week, showcases the top destinations on the rise for the upcoming year. Topping the list, which compares 44 global destinations, is Kapa’a, Hawaii (for the U.S.) and Ishigaki, Japan (for the world). Omaha, NE earned the No. 9 spot in the top US destinations on the rise, citing Waren Buffet’s love of his hometown, plus the world’s largest indoor desert.

One attribute used to analyze these destinations is the search and booking interest. In addition, they took into account travel review ratings for the destination and for local businesses catering to travelers.  See the full list of rankings here.

State Department rolls out new travel advisory program

This new system assigns a travel advisory level from 1 to 4 to every country in the world. For instance, Level 1 (Exercise Normal Precautions) is the lowest-level advisory level for safety and security risks. Level 4 (Do Not Travel) is the highest advisory level, reserved for destinations in which the U.S. government deems they may have “very limited ability to provide assistance” to travelers.

The new system allows for security information about travel destinations to be more accessible as well as more understandable.

When choosing the location for your destination wedding, a lot of factors can come into play. What are the travel logistics like? Is it within your budget? Is it a place your guests would enjoy traveling to? Choosing the venue for your destination wedding brings about a myriad of questions. There are all the straightforward issues like whether the venue can accommodate the size of your wedding or if it’s available on your chosen date, but there are also some personal factors to consider.

Above all else, your destination wedding venue and the resort where it is held should suit your and your significant other’s style and personality. Picking a beautiful, appropriate setting for your ceremony and reception can do a lot of the stylistic work for you. So, be sure to factor in your emotional wants, not just the technical details, when deciding on a venue. Below are some examples of venues based on a couple’s personality.

Holiday travel is in full swing, which means crowds and extra stress at the airport. Airline travel is becoming more and more uncomfortable in today’s world. Read below for our best tips on handling this stressful time of year while traveling.

holiday travel 3

1. Make a list of things to do before your trip

This list may include stopping the paper (or having someone else pick it up for you)  and calling the bank to give them your travel dates and where you are headed. This way your credit card doesn’t get suspended while you’re traveling. Don’t forget to make sure you have someone to care for your plants and pets!

2. Make a packing list

Don’t wait until the last minute to throw things in your suitcase, especially if you are going to be traveling for a week or more. If you are going somewhere chilly, keep in mind that packing your winter wear (such as boots and coats), these items will take up more room than you may expect.

3. Avoid Overpacking

Leave room for your purchases and gifts while you’re traveling. A good tip is to pack the gifts you have for loved ones, then you know you will have extra room when you replace them with the gifts you receive.

4. Check with your airline ahead of time to make sure you know the rules for what you can bring with you on the plane

These rules vary among airlines, for the size and content of luggage, as well as what you can carry on. For example, on Frontier airlines, you will be charged even for a carry-on (actually, you will be charged more for a carry-on than for a checked bag). There’s no point in cramming everything in a smaller bag if it is just going to cost you more!

5. Check your airline’s recommendations for what time you should check in at the airport

Don’t try to save time by showing up right before the flight, as you will only stress yourself and everyone else out. Check in early and enjoy the amenities available in your airport, including reading a book or magazine or electronic device in the waiting area. This is especially important if you are traveling with little ones. It may take extra time to get them through security, to the bathroom before take-off, and for last minute needs and snacks. Keep in mind that many airports now have free Wi-Fi, so if you are worried about keeping your kids busy, have a plan for something for them to watch so you do not get more stressed.

6. Dress comfortably and in layers to adjust to cabin temperatures

We never get on a flight without a pair of socks and a lightweight but warm jacket. For longer flights, consider bringing a travel pillow and blanket.

7. Wear slip-on shoes to make getting through security easy

For international flights, you may need to remove your shoes more than once (another good reason to bring socks). It is much more comfortable to be standing in a public line with socks on rather than your bare feet.

8. Be sure to have luggage tags on the outside and inside of your bags

If for some reason your outer tags come off, you will be able to prove that your bags are yours with the inside tag.

9. Bring your own food if you want to avoid having to buy food on the plane

Stick with cold items, and don’t choose highly spicy, garlicky, or other strong-smelling food out of respect for your seatmates.

And finally, enjoy your trip! Travel is a gift that should be treasured.

Call Enchanted Honeymoons Travel at 402-281-3022 to plan your last minute holiday travel!

Your honeymoon should be a once in a lifetime trip for you and your new spouse. With the ever-growing number of options when it comes to destinations and resorts, the planning process for this special trip can be a bit daunting. Follow our tips below to ensure a stress-free honeymoon planning process.

1. Make a plan & set priorities

When we first meet with clients, we recommend you sit down to discuss priorities for your honeymoon. Create a list of must-see and must-do activities and use this list to create an initial budget. This will be your guideline throughout the planning stage.

2. Travel Agents can help you plan an Affordable Honeymoon

As travel agents, we have access to exclusive wedding packages that you will not find online or directly through a hotel. In addition, the relationships that travel agents have with hotels can earn you free perks such as a room upgrade or couples massage. Not only will travel agents save you money, they are also your first point of contact if any issues should arise.

3. Weigh your options

After you set your priorities, Travel+Leisure suggests that you list several options at varying costs that fit your budget. A travel agent can help you narrow down and compare these options.

4. Be realistic

Be aware that you will have at least some out of pocket expenses on your trip, even if you are staying at an All-Inclusive. Factor in every expense you might incur from the cab to the airport to the extra tip for a helpful staff member at your resort. Include an estimate of these expenses in your initial budget for your Affordable Honeymoon.

5. Beware of Hidden Fees

Hidden fees and unknown deposits can blindside travelers that are not prepared. If booking your Affordable Honeymoon through a travel agency, they should be aware of all fees and deposits you will encounter. If you are booking any portion on your own, it is wise to call the hotel, airline, and transportation service prior to arriving in destination to make yourself aware of hidden costs.

6. Look out for free stuff and discounts

Ask about free perks and discounts upfront – whether to your travel agent or directly to the hotel or airline. If you are staying at an All-Inclusive resort, check what is included with your package. Some resorts offer motorized sports, resort credits for off-property excursions, or specialty classes such as mixology or yoga. Be aware of what is included in each of your narrowed-down options in order to make an educated decision on your Affordable Honeymoon.

7. Take advantage of your newlywed status

Tell everyone you meet that you are on your honeymoon! Most restaurants and resorts will indulge you and offer free stuff such as a bottle of champagne or the table with the best view. Some car companies in Hawaii offer a free convertible upgrade for honeymooners. All you have to do is ask!

8. Consider a honeymoon registry

A honeymoon registry allows your wedding guests to gift you with activities and upgrades for your honeymoon, such as a candlelit dinner or couples massage. Many travel agencies offer this service free of charge, and several websites are also available that you can set up on your own for free.

9. Choose an Off-Season Destination

Choose a destination whose off-season or shoulder-season (the period right before and after high season) coincides with your travel dates. This will offer you discounted prices and less crowds. It is not true that off-season always entails bad weather. Many Caribbean destinations have warm temperatures year-round, but their demand skyrockets from January to April as tourists wish to escape the winter blues. This cannot be said about all destinations you may be considering, however. Many locations do experience scorching heat or bitter cold during their off-season, so be sure to do your research. Once again, a travel agent can help you with this.

10. Consider Alternate Airports

If you live in an area with a few nearby airports to choose from, be sure to compare prices between them. It may be worth driving a farther distance if it means saving a significant amount of money. Prices vary greatly depending on the size of the airport and the airlines that fly there. Let your travel agent know that you are open to alternate airports so they can compare these for you.

With so many resorts to choose from, it’s easy to get overwhelmed by pictures, online reviews, and overall information overload. Get in touch with an Enchanted Honeymoons travel agent today about all-inclusive packages in Mexico!
